Happy tears highlight impact for pharmacy technician

Molly Walter, CPhT, enjoys helping patients through her role on the Specialty Pharmacy team

As a certified pharmacy technician, Molly Walter, CPhT, regularly helps University of Iowa Health Care patients navigate the complexities of specialty medications.

She provides support for prior authorizations and copay assistance, and is a helpful resource for her aging patients, especially with Medicare.

In June, Walter was recognized as Pharmacy Technician of the Year by the Iowa Pharmacy Association. Walter’s nominators describe her as an “ideal team player” in her role on the Specialty Pharmacy team.

“Without Molly’s expertise and dedication to patient care,” said one nominator, “many patients would simply not have access to the therapy they need.”

We asked Walter to share more about her role, her most memorable moment at UI Health Care, and her life outside of work.

Attend our Open House Hiring Event on Friday, Aug. 15 to explore a meaningful career with Iowa’s top health system. We’re hiring for pharmacy technicians (trainee or certified), pharmacy support services specialists, and pharmacy revenue cycle positions.

Molly Walter, CPhT, was named Pharmacy Technician of the Year by the Iowa Pharmacy Association in June 2025.

What is your role at UI Health Care, and what are some of your responsibilities?

My role is Benefits Investigation and Prior Authorization Representative for the Specialty Pharmacy. I oversee specific clinics within the Specialty Pharmacy with the bulk of my work being for cardiology, lipidology, and orthopedics. My job includes assessing a patient’s current insurance status and completing prior authorizations and appeals for specialty medications.

Because most of my key clinics often have an older patient population, I spend a lot of time explaining the ins and outs of Medicare Part D to help our patients better understand their potential costs and responsibilities.

When needed, I also assist in enrolling patients in grants, copay cards, and other programs that help our patients afford these, typically, high-cost medications. I also act as resource for sharing information on programs like the Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) and Extra Help which can make a big difference in our patients’ lives.

Ideally, I’m a liaison between the doctors, ARNPs, pharmacists, nurses and a patient’s insurance. This frees up the providers' time to focus on direct patient care, rather than spending time on the phone or filling out paperwork. The goal is to match our patients to available resources so they can make the best medical choice for their needs without worrying so much about the price tag.

What kind of degree or specialized training did you need for this role?

I received my training on the job and worked towards getting my Pharmacy Technician Certification within a year of being hired. I renew this certification every two years by completing online Continuing Education credits. That was 15 years ago, and now there are more programs available to train and receive certification beforehand, including one here at the university.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I’m so happy when I’m able to help patients understand their insurance plans and how to navigate the often more expensive side of specialty medications. More than a few times, there have been happy tears on both sides of the phone when we’re able to tell them we’ve finally gotten a medication approved or have much-needed financial assistance in place.

What is your most memorable moment at UI Health Care?

My favorite moment was a series of conversations that happened around the holidays a few years ago – thanks to anticipating some changes in both Medicare and an available assistance program. I was able to call about 20 cardiology patients around the holidays and tell them that not only was funding for a very expensive medication secured, but that their out-of-pocket costs for their all their medications were about to drastically decrease after the New Year. There were a lot of happy tears that month. A number of those patients said they’d be putting in a good word to Santa Claus for me that year.

How would you describe what it’s like to work for UI Health Care?

I appreciate the opportunities I’ve had with UI Health Care over the last 15 years. I’ve been able to work in numerous ways within the Department of Pharmaceutical Care, which has helped me grow as an employee and as a person, never losing sight of the real people that we are trying to help every day.

What are some of your favorite things to do outside of work?

Right now, I’m kept busy by two very active children – running all over town to play practice, martial arts testing, scouting, after-school clubs, and many, many concerts with the Iowa City Community School District band, choirs, and show choirs. I also volunteer regularly with the Iowa City Animal Shelter. Every now and then I find time to paint, and sometimes I can be found at the Iowa City Farmers Market selling my illustrations.
