Enterprise Chief Strategy Officer, Professor and Chair, Department of Pathology
Nitin Karandikar, MD, PhD, was named the enterprise chief strategy officer for UI Health Care on July 1, 2025, expanding his executive leadership responsibilities while he continues to serve as professor and chair of the Department of Pathology.
In his role as enterprise chief strategy officer, Karandikar sets UI Health Care’s strategic priorities, fostering innovation in the context of its mission, vision, and position in Iowa’s evolving health care landscape. This includes setting the strategy implementation plan, annual key metrics, and performance goals.
Karandikar has served as chair and department executive officer of the Department of Pathology since 2013. During his time as chair, he has bolstered the department’s research enterprise, maintained strong educational programs for students and trainees of all levels, and fostered consistently high faculty engagement scores, above the national average.
Beyond his leadership responsibilities, Karandikar’s clinical expertise is in the area of hematopathology, where he focuses on the flow cytoemtric diagnosis of leukemias and lymphomas. The goal of his research is to understand immune interactions that underlie the pathogenesis and regulation of immune-mediated diseases, particularly multiple sclerosis.
