University of Iowa Health Care has received approval from the Iowa Board of Regents to proceed with planning to renovate and modernize areas of our downtown campus over the next several years. These improvements will help us stay at the forefront of health care, create a better working environment for providers and staff, and enhance the quality of care for patients.

Explore the photos below (captured in September 2024) to learn more about where initial investments will be made as part of this multi-year project.

Radiology equipment replacement and renovations

This project will upgrade or replace existing radiology equipment and infrastructure to support some of the newest technology to increase throughput, access, and quality of care provided (Photo of current radiology equipment as of September 2024).
Prep and recovery areas will be modernized to improve the overall patient experience with a refreshed look.

Operating rooms

This project will renovate and modernize 14 existing operating rooms and associated diagnostic and treatment platforms, including new equipment, replacement of finishes, information technology upgrades, medical gas system improvements, and systems integration (Photo of current operating room equipment as of September 2024).
Additionally, these rooms will be outfitted to support full integration with Epic.

Hospital infrastructure replacements and renovations

To keep up with the changing health care landscape for facility requirements, regulatory changes, and advances in medical technology and provisions of patient care, several projects will take place over the next ten years to upgrade electrical systems, replace roofing and HVAC components, modernize elevators, and perform strategic technology replacements and upgrades (Aerial shot of the roof at Medical Center Downtown as of May 2024).
Select areas of the hospital will also be renovated to allow for new and existing clinical services to grow and meet the required regulatory and physical space needs to promote patient care.

Parking structure

This project will evaluate and fund repair or replacement of the existing parking structure on the downtown campus (Photo of current parking ramp as of September 2024).

Medical Office Building renovations

This project will renovate the building as a phased approach. The work planned includes elevator modernizations, telecommunications upgrades, flooring, finishes, equipment, and furniture updates.
