Melissa Whisler, MBA, MHA, has been named the executive director of UI Health Care's Transformation Office, which will drive and support alignment between strategy, implementation, and operational efforts across the enterprise missions of research, education, and patient care.
Whisler has served in this position on an interim basis since July and will assume the role on a permanent basis, reporting to Bevan Yueh, MD, MPH, chief physician executive of UI Health Care.
In this leadership position, Whisler will guide improvement efforts across the whole enterprise, with a focus on helping UI Health Care continuously evolve — enhancing patient care, streamlining operations, and staying ahead in a rapidly changing health care environment.
Whisler will also serve as a core member of the newly formed Enterprise Performance Council, which is responsible for reviewing and shaping enterprise priorities, aligning those priorities with objectives and metrics, and managing complex challenges that affect UI Health Care.
“In her new role, Melissa will be working closely with clinical, academic, and health sciences leaders to drive organizational change and advance our strategic imperatives. She is uniquely qualified to take on this highly collaborative and forward-looking role because of her well-rounded understanding of our entire health system – built on nearly 20 years of experience — and her continuous commitment to progress,” says Yueh. “Melissa has an impressive and longstanding track record of building strong, cross-disciplinary teams, championing accountability, and delivering impactful results. I’m looking forward to seeing those skills applied to this new role in driving innovation and accelerating transformation across our organization.”
Working closely with clinical, operational, collegiate, and administrative leaders, Whisler will help drive high-impact strategic imperatives to enhance organizational performance. This role will also oversee work in the Transformation Office to guide effective implementation and execution of strategic projects. The work of the Transformation Office will support collaboration across departments and help our teams improve enterprise performance by enhancing operational processes, leveraging technology, relying on data analytics, and implementing best practices.
Whisler joined UI Health Care in 2008 and currently serves as the administrative chief of staff for the clinical enterprise of UI Health Care.
She has also previously served as clinical department administrator in the Stead Family Department of Pediatrics and the Department of Emergency Medicine. From January 2023 through July 2024, she served as the interim chief administrative officer of University of Iowa Health Care Stead Family Children’s Hospital.
An internal search will begin immediately to fill the role of administrative chief of staff for the clinical enterprise.
